Updates

Coffee Cake fundraiser

It’s that delicious time of year again! Our coffee cake fundraiser with My Grandma’s of New

England kicks off this week. Brochures and order forms will be distributed to classrooms to go

home with students on Monday. We always appreciate any cakes staff members can buy/sell

as well. Some extra order forms will be available in the main office. Orders and payment are

due by Wednesday, January 25th.

Retention Notices

Please let me know as soon as possible if you have any students who may be a candidate for

retention. These must begin soon after the break as we approach the halfway mark. In order

to be considered for retention, candidates must all be brought forward to the Student Support

Team and interventions and recommendations must be implemented.

  1. Let the admin know of any students who may need to be retained. We will check for seat availability (while this is not a reason for or against retention, it is important information for families and school to know if seats are available!)
  2. If you have had a conversation with the family, great, please fill out this form (backdatewith the date you met with the family) and send it home for signature.
  3. If you have not yet had a conversation, please fill out this same form and coordinate with admin (if you would like support) to find a date to meet. Because of availability with seats, this should be finalized by 5/1.

FROM BPS CIRCULAR ON PROMOTION AND RETENTION:

“ By the end of January, formal, written notices must be sent to parents of students who

remain at risk of being retained. The Promotion Review Team will meet in February and

before the end of the year to review and make decisions on students who are at risk of being

retained. Principals and Heads of School have the final authority for all promotion decisions.

During the period from February through June, schools must maintain written, bimonthly

contact with parents who were sent formal, written notices to apprise them of their child’s

progress.  Copies of these notifications must be kept on file.

Any student who is retained, or remains at-risk even though they were promoted, will be

provided with additional support, including tutoring during the subsequent school year.”

Tae Kwon Do

Tae Kwon Do with Sensei Phil will begin on the week of January 23rd. All classes will take

place in Cafeteria B. Forms to purchase uniforms will go out this week. The cost of

uniforms will be $30 each. For families who choose not to buy a uniform, there will be some

uniforms available for students to borrow for class.

Voluntary Excess Deadline

  • Applications due 2/1. Teachers or paras looking to be reassigned may complete
  • this form and refer here for more information.

Mice

We got some friendly mice in the building. Please do not leave food out. We’ve put in a

work order.

TpT

We have 124 licenses left for the year on Teachers Pay Teachers. Please be sure to share

resources with the grade-level team and resources. TpT is a great source to help supplement

your sub folder that should contain at least 3 days of work.

Lexia News from Ms. Purple

I met before the break with our Lexia Customer Service Manager, David Ciarla. He is helping

me think about how the Lexia program fits into our school community. I’ll be picking your

brains about it over the next week or so and appreciate your honest feedback about what’s

working, what’s challenging, and what additional professional learning you’re interested in

through the Lexia platform.

Below is a look at school-wide Lexia usage from the beginning of the year until the end of

December. Usage is measured on a weekly basis. Target minutes vary depending on the

student’s Lexia level. You can find target minutes in your Lexia dashboard.

Let’s see if we can get our usage back at 50% or above and all students out of placement

mode by February break.

I’ll share some other information and resources from my meeting with Mr. Ciarla in the next

staff newsletter.

Also, 3rd grade recently shared with me that students are experiencing technical problems

with the app involving a portion of the screen being grayed out. If any other grades have also

noticed, please let me know. I’ve reached out to OIIT and am waiting to hear back.

Math

Close the GAP

By the end of this week, the expectation is that we are at 36% progress completion. As a

school, we are currently at 26%. We only have about 5 classrooms at the moment that will

meet or exceed the expectations out of 13 classes.

How will you help close the gap this week? This month? ST Math can serve as morning work

during arrival. It can be added to a center/station throughout the week. There’s a potential for

indoor recess on Friday where students can spend some time.

Reminder: Celebrate students for their work in ST math.

Here are some ideas and resources to use.

Enable 2-Step Verification on your Google Account

Fall is our favorite time of year but nobody likes it when they fall for a phishing scam! Protect

yourself against phishing scams (and stop these terrible puns) by enabling 2-step verification

today!

The link below will take you to the instructions and we recommend downloading the Gmail

app for iPhone or Android ahead of time. The Gmail app saves you time by turning the 2-step verification into a simple

yes or no, instead of using text-message codes.

2-Step Verification Instructions

All staff - Feb 1, 2023

Thank you for helping to protect the BPS!

Process does not take too long. Please complete it as soon as possible.

Thanks to the following staff who have completed the 2-Step Verification:

ETWA

Want to update the election to work agreement? Do you have a great idea you would like to

share? Here is your opportunity. The Election to Work Agreement has not been updated in years and this could be an

opportunity for us to make some meaningful changes. Think about how we can truly make an impact and move the work and when thinking of suggestions, put our students at the center of those suggestions; is this what our students need? Will this move the work in the right direction? Your voice is important!

Please see Ms. Aviles with any questions or concerns.

LAST CALL:

After School Club  Opportunity

I know many of you have interests and talents you would like to share with our students.

We have allocated $10,000 this year for stipends for staff members to run an after school club.

Staff members will be paid the BTU rate. If interested, please share your idea here.
