Updates

MCAS

Students in grade 3 will begin testing tomorrow! YAY! We ask that teachers inform their students of being

respectful in the hallways, especially, on the second floor. Students are to file quietly through the hallways.

Rooms and spaces that will be used: 201, 202, 203, 208 A&B, Chery’s office and LoBue’s and Purple’s

office.

Please be aware that Ms. Maude will be proctoring and Ms. Jen and Ms. Jasmin will be on standby and

serve as hallway monitors. However, continue to use the SWARM chain/messages for emergencies.

April Incentive:

Students will be able to earn extra recess this month for our monthly incentive. I was hoping to take

advantage of that opportunity and have a FRIENDLY but competitive game of kickball. I was thinking

of either staff vs. third grade; teachers vs. paras or second grade vs. third grade? with Ms. Hart serving

as the umpire. Please let me know what you think.

Bathroom policy

There have been a couple of incidents that have occurred on both the first-floor and second-floor

bathrooms and would like to recalibrate the expectations discussed at the beginning of the year.

First-floor bathroom: Students are to be monitored at all times. An adult should be escorting students to the bathroom. If

there is only one adult in the classroom, please use the SWARM text message group/chain for your

classroom. If someone from SWARM is not available for whatever reason, then send the student to the

office with a note indicating students need to use the bathroom. The student will be directed to use the

nurse’s office bathroom or Ms. Zoraida will be sent outside the bathroom. We want to minimize the

number of incidents and/or opportunities when there are a number of students being sent unsupervised.

Last week, at one point there were at least three students in the bathroom. Parents are questioning and

have been questioning the lack of supervision and why incidents are occurring. As a former classroom

teacher, I inform parents that the reality is when cannot catch and or prevent everything. However, let’s

try to control what we can in hopes of ensuring the safety of everyone.

Second-floor bathroom: Students will now be expected to sign in and out of the classroom when going to the bathroom. Students have been drawing on the walls, flooding the toilets, and locking the stalls. I ordered digital

clocks for each classroom on the second floor and we will start this policy/process once the clocks get in.

Home visits

Team, I still hope to continue to use this strategy as a means of building strong school-home partnerships.

Out of $20,000 we have just about $7,600 left. This means that we have about over 300 of

staff/opportunities in which we engaged families so far this year outside of the school in their

community/homes. I encourage everyone to continue with the home visits if they find them beneficial.

Junk/Spam

Please check your junk/spam folder for any messages from me, colleagues, or either the district. I believe

there could have been some sort of changes that have occurred in the algorithm recently. Some messages

have been going to the spam folder, in particular, messages from the district.

Reminder, please be sure to check your mailbox in the office, especially Tuesday afternoons when the

The Special Education clerk is here.

Food and Rugs

Mr. Bill asks that students refrain from eating food and snacks on the classroom rugs. Many of the new

rugs are stained and

Data

Attendance:

Mondays and Fridays are a major concern. I will be meeting with Govi to discuss these trends and

develop a plan and/or incentives.

Literacy

Lexia:

There has been a spike in interest in classrooms/students wanting to use Lexia. Which is AWESOME!

However, our school was only allocated 130 licenses. I am trying to communicate with the district in

obtaining more licenses from schools/classrooms in the district that are not using them for us to be able

to purchase more. More information to come soon: hopefully.

Math

Please check on any alerts your class may have. Some alerts may be because students have left the

journey with an alert and are currently working on individual or class assignments. If you have any

questions please reach out to me (Brian).

IEP Improvement project

DESE has released a new IEP form that has not been updated since 2001. In BPS most schools

have their own process and forms. There have not been any directives yet from BPS. However, I do

know the goal of BPS is to tighten its systems and structures as a district. I will not be surprised if we

have to adopt the form. Here is the form. I will update the school community as I get more information.

Operations

Fire Drill

Please remember to close your doors when all students have exited the classroom. When exiting the

building, students should not stop moving. Many classrooms/students had to stop and go for close to 20

seconds to exit. In an emergency, every second counts. Use both sides of the staircase and both doors.

Furthermore, facilities have inquired about the metal bars for the classroom doors. They are looking to

see if they are being stored anywhere in the building or have to reconstruct them which will take more

time.

Later/Reminders

From Bonnie Paton, covering COSE:

Hi,

There is a good chance there will be some meetings held over the April break if reports are uploaded on

edplan.  I am hoping some can be LAPS  meetings and with that the below are meetings. If you can

have the staff have their ARs and goals uploaded before the break that would be great.
